I have experience serving on numerous committees and commissions; particularly around the topic of water supply, water quality, wastewater treatment and the establishment of technical standards for non-potable water systems.

I served for many years as a member of the Saanich Peninsula Water Commission and Wastewater Committee, Chairperson for the Central Saanich Water and Waste Management Committee and as a consumer representative to the Non-Potable Water Systems Committee for the Canadian Standards Association.

Following the 2011 election, the Mayor recommended to council that I be appointed to these committees again in addition to the Regional Water Supply Commission of the CRD which was adopted by the council.

I have a keen interest in recycling and believe that we can divert more “trash” from the landfill and strive towards “zero waste”. There is no such thing as waste in nature, everything gets used. We need to embrace the natural system by recycling products and rejecting the idea that we can simply find a hole in the earth to dump our garbage.

I believe in actually doing stuff and not only talking about it, so I’ve often volunteered to get the job done at the monthly soft plastic recycling depots which take various items not accepted by the curbside blue box recycling program. In addition to volunteering for recycling, I have experience as a councillor on the Capital Regional District’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee.

I’ve had the successful experience of improving relations with First Nations. As the municipal Liaison to First Nations between 2002 and 2006, I led the first ever Community to Community Forums with Tsartlip and Tsawout First Nations. I am not the liaison to First Nations presently, but my passion and desire to build a better relationship is as strong as ever. While voter turnout is low in municipal elections, I think that is a result of poor engagement strategies by local officials and governments. Citizens are interested in local government issues and decisions when you talk with them, local government just needs to do a better job of positively marketing civic participation.

Just think of the ads the local government puts in the newspaper today. They’re in a box with a font so small that you almost need a magnifying glass to read it. They don’t engage citizens in the planning process.  If Toyota placed an ad like this...  

Much remains to be done and I’d like your help to make our municipality and region an even better place to live.

I have a particular passion for working with others to solve problems. Collective wisdom is our best chance to solve our problems. As an example of being able to collaborate with others, I led a team of citizens to successfully complete a grant application for a municipal Community Energy Plan; resulting in $60,000 that went towards new energy efficiency initiatives for the District of Central Saanich. I always keep an eye out for grant opportunities and ways to work with residents.
